Career Programs:
The Furniture Design program is a one-year, hands-on woodworking program for students who want to study furniture design, furniture making, and fine woodworking in a focused studio environment. Students explore the history of furniture design while learning joinery, shaping, carving, surface treatments, finishes, veneering, and design development. Through real projects and guided studio practice, students develop their own aesthetic while building practical skills for creative careers in woodworking.
SBWI’s Timber Framing program is a one-year, hands-on carpentry program in that teaches students how to build with wood at an architectural scale.
Students learn how raw materials become durable buildings through careful layout, strong joinery, teamwork, and skilled hands. Whether you are new to the trades or ready to take your craft further, this program gives you a path into meaningful work as a carpenter, timber framer, or builder.
Architectural Carpentry & Preservation
The curriculum draws from preservation standards established by the U.S. Department of the Interior, emphasizing repair over replacement and the retention of historic materials whenever possible. Students will begin by constructing new architectural elements and structures in the studio before moving to on-site fieldwork. With a bottom-up understanding of finish carpentry and broad exposure to the latest in preservation methods, you will be equipped to choose from the full range of careers building new or preserving old.
SBWI veteran students are celebrated each year at our Annual Veteran Moral Day event!
